How many selves?

Goffman discusses the concept of dramaturgy, in which he explains there are several roles individuals act out in specific situations. Think about the last interaction you had with another individual(s), what kind of actor where you playing and why? Was it only one self that was being exposed, or several?

  1. One interaction involved a bank teller. Initially, the actor I performed was client given I was visiting the bank. However, I performed several selves as the clerk and I interacted. I was simultaneously a peer (the clerk was a young woman like myself), a client given I wished to deposit a check, and a nonprofit comforter given the teller discussed how her (second) career as a cosmetologist was not one she enjoyed. Indeed, the self is a fluctuating product of interaction.
